Lincoln House Patient Participation Group (PPG)- Health Promotion News!
At the last PPG meeting discussion was had about the current screening programme for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA)
What is it?
An Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm is an abnormal swelling in the main artery supplying blood around
the body. There is a risk that this could burst , which may be fatal.
How do I get screened?
You will be contacted if eligible. Screening is a free NHS service offered to men who are most at risk , registered with a GP and 65 + to detect an aneurysm.
What test will I have?
This is an ultrasound scan which is quick , painless and reliable and would be offered locally.
What do I need to do?
If you do receive an invitation to be screened: We would urge all male patients to take this opportunity as it
could save your life.
Screening is only necessary once, provided all is normal. Any abnormality will require follow up scans and regular meetings with the appropriate nurse at the hospital.
Unfortunately statistics show that often patients ignore the nurse follow ups, so we would again urge patients affected to
make sure they attend all appointments scheduled.
